Questions to Pat Nolan about definition of societal types in Appendix of Human Societies 8e (pp. 419-421):

Q1 - Steps 1 to 4 on pp. 419-420 discuss only cases in which the dependence score (on hunting and gathering, fishing, herding, or agriculture) is 6 or greater to classify societies into "hunting and gathering", "fishing", "herding", "simple horticultural" (plow absent and metals absent), "advanced horticultural" (plow absent and metals present), and "agrarian" (plow present). Then Steps 5 and 6 discuss how the dominant mode of subsistence is defined when dependence scores are 4 or 5; but there is no further discussion of how societies are then classified into "simple horticultural", "advanced horticultural", or "agrarian" according to the presence/absence of metals and the plow. My question is, should Steps 4 and 5 be performed first to determine the dominant mode of subsistence, and only then agriculture-dominant societies classified further into "simple horticultural", "advanced horticultural", or "agrarian" as described in Steps 2 and 3?
Q2 - Presence of metal working can be assessed with 2 variables (V44 and V55); V44 implies that metal working is absent in n=516 societies; V55 implies it is absent in n=533 societies. My question is, how did you reconcile information from these 2 variables in cases where it is contradictory?
Q3 - In using V39 to determine whether the plow is present, do you code both category 2 and 3 as "plow present", or only category 3?
Q4 - I wonder of you have kept a listing of the program used to create the societal types, in any language, as it would help a great deal in answering these questions and duplicating your coding successfully.
